Population

From Arcanum Illyria

Jump to: navigation, search

Population (or 'pop' for short) is the measure used on Illyriad to determine how large a city (or a number of cities) is. Population is determined by how much Food a city is using up each hour. Population is one of the eight factors that make up a player's general ranking, and is often used by different players to show their rank as a secondary source to their overall ranking. Population cannot be transferred from one player to another, it can only be earned by upgrading buildings.

The buildings that are the best for increasing population are the ones that use up the most food, such as common ground, consulate, and mage tower. Total Food consumption is equivalent to total population. So, for example, building a level 13 quarry increases both Food consumption and population by 14 - 12, or 2.

Settling Requirements

Settling your nth city requires that you dispatch (n-1) settlers in a single mission, which means having that many settlers at a single city. Players are advised to be sure they keep up with settler production until they have their first few cities, since settlers take so long to build and can delay progress substantially if forgotten. Mainly, however, certain amounts of population must be achieved before players will be allowed to settle their next city.

Note: Settling an 11th city previously required 515,500 population, which was unachievable. As of February 23, 2015, population requirements for over 10 cities was decreased.

Proof: 515K correspond to 10 cities at an average of 51,500 population. 25 basic resource plots, city walls, common grounds, paddock, warehouse, and (in theory) 22 trade offices at level 20 give only 25*37+20+2*1497+370+22*2000=48,909 population.
