Smithing enables building a blacksmith, which allows players to make swords and chainmail. Along with a level 10 blacksmith, it is also a prerequisite for researching forging.
To research Smithing, you must first research Timekeeping→Craftsmanship→Smelting, have an iron mine of level 7 or higher, and have a foundry of level 5 or higher.
