Resources
From Arcanum Illyria
Illyriad has 20 types of resources in total, many of which are used in different ways and represent different vulnerabilities. Several different terms are also used to represent certain subsets of the resource types, and knowing what they mean becomes important when trying to understand game mechanics such as Theft. The complete set of resources are:
Wood Natural resource ![]() | Food Natural resource ![]() | Horses Advanced resource ![]() | Spears Basic equipment resource ![]() | Leather Armour Basic equipment (resource) ![]() |
Clay Natural resource ![]() | Gold Primary resource ![]() | Livestock Advanced resource ![]() | Swords Basic equipment (resource) ![]() | Chainmail Advanced equipment (resource) ![]() |
Iron Natural resource ![]() | Mana Primary resource ![]() | Beer Basic secondary resource ![]() | Bows Basic equipment (resource) ![]() | Plate Armour Advanced equipment (resource) ![]() |
Stone Natural resource ![]() | Research Primary resource ![]() | Books Basic secondary resource ![]() | Saddles Advanced equipment resource ![]() | Siege Blocks Advanced equipment resource ![]() |
The following terms for resource subsets need to be clearly defined:
- Building Resources: The only resources used for building or upgrading structures (but not used only for that, so let's be careful with misplaced modifiers :).
- Production Resources: The resources used for producing other resources or units.
- Advanced Resources: Resources that can be stolen exclusively by Advanced Thieves.
- Equipment: Non-livestock resources needed to produce units. The resources used exclusively by the military.
- Natural Resources: The resources taken from outside a city, and the ones that can be lost in a raid (Wood, Clay, Iron, Stone, and Food).

Resource Categories
Resources are categorized into several subgroups, many of which are not mutually exclusive. Each group shares some common set of attributes, such as trading (shipping) requirements, gathering limits, or type of attack/units that can steal it.
Primary
These are Wood, Clay, Iron, Stone, Food, Gold, Mana, and Research. They are the complement of the Secondary Resources. "Base cost" refers to the total cost of an item in primary resources--breaking down any Secondary Resources into their primary resource cost and summing those values.
- They are automatically produced over time, at an hourly rate affected by various resource structures.
- They do not share common shipping requirements.
- They do not share common theft requirements.
- They do not share common protection levels.
- They do not share common raiding vulnerability.
Secondary
These are Horses, Livestock, Beer, Books, Spears, Swords, Bows, Saddles, Leather Armour, Chainmail, Plate Armour, and Siege Blocks. Secondary resources are not gathered, but constructed in various for a cost in Primary and potentially other Secondary Resources.
- They are all produced on demand in specified quantities (as opposed to harvested over time).
- They do not share common shipping requirements.
- They do not share common theft requirements.
- They are all protected from theft by the vault's smaller "all other resources" amount.
- They do not share common raiding vulnerability.
- They are limited by storage space.
Stored
These are Wood, Clay, Iron, Stone, and Food. They are noteworthy as the only resources that are limited by storage space, and are a subset of the primary resources.
CORRECTION: This appears to have been changed by a stealth update/fix. Now gold, mana, and research are the only resources not stored, and this category is non-useful.
Produce
These are Gold, Horses, Livestock, Beer, Books. Produce are the low-level resources not directly taken from a resource plot (Lumberjack, Clay Pit, Iron Mine, Quarry, or Farmyard).
- They require Negotiation→Consulate (11)→Finesse→Diplomacy→Theft→Thiefmastery→Tier 2 Thief to steal from other cities.
